Italian Graded Readers

Novels and Short Stories from Italian Classic Literature

There comes a point when learning Italian should become more than studying Italian: you should be able to read in Italian. To read a real story simply because you want to know what happens next.

This collection was created for that moment. These are not short texts written simply to practise vocabulary or grammar, but adaptations of works of Italian literature for learners who want to experience the pleasure of reading a complete story in Italian.

They are also designed for extensive reading: reading for longer periods, following the overall meaning, relying on context, and continuing without constantly stopping to check a dictionary or analyse every grammatical structure. The aim is not to understand every single word, but to stay immersed in the language while enjoying the story.

Adapting a classic, however, involves much more than simplifying vocabulary and grammar. A work written one, two, or several centuries ago may contain narrative conventions, digressions, cultural references, rhetoric, and rhythms that can make the reading experience unnecessarily difficult for a modern foreign learner. Each adaptation therefore tries to preserve the story, the characters, the atmosphere, and the spirit of the original while making the narrative more direct, fluent, and accessible.

The level suggested for each title is only a general guide. Your native language, reading experience, and familiarity with Italian can make a considerable difference. The best way to find out whether a book is right for you is to read the sample: if you can follow the story and want to keep reading, then the book is probably right for you.

Above all, choose according to what you enjoy reading: fairy tales and fantasy, adventure, short stories, historical drama, psychological crime, and more. The most important thing is not the label on the cover, but whether the story makes you want to turn the page.
