The story
Sandokan is a Malay prince who has lost his kingdom. From the island of Mompracem he leads a group of fearless pirates known as the Tigers of Mompracem and fights against the colonial powers that have taken his land. Sandokan is brave, proud and impulsive. His closest friend, Yanez de Gomera, is very different: calm, intelligent and ironic. Then Sandokan meets Marianna, the “Pearl of Labuan.” He falls in love with her, but Marianna belongs to the world of his enemies. To reach her, Sandokan must risk his life and face capture, danger and difficult choices. The adventure moves quickly from the pirate island of Mompracem to enemy territory, through sea journeys and dramatic confrontations.
Why read this edition?
The original Le tigri di Mompracem was published in 1900. Salgari’s language is rich and vivid, but some vocabulary and sentence structures can be difficult for modern students of Italian. In this edition, difficult and old-fashioned vocabulary has been reduced, long and complex sentences have been simplified, while the characters, action and atmosphere of Salgari’s novel remain intact. Emilio Salgari and Sandokan
Emilio Salgari was one of the most popular Italian adventure writers of his time. Le tigri di Mompracem introduced Sandokan, the legendary “Tiger of Malaysia,” and began the series of novels that made him famous. Sandokan became one of the best-known characters in Italian popular culture and later inspired films, comics and the celebrated television series of the 1970s. More than a century after its publication, Le tigri di Mompracem still offers the same mix of adventure, passion and rebellion that made Sandokan famous.
