Discover Pirandello Through His Stories
Luigi Pirandello (1867–1936), winner of the 1934 Nobel Prize in Literature, is one of the most important Italian writers of the twentieth century. Known internationally for his theatre, he also wrote a remarkable range of short fiction.
His stories portray miners, farmers, small-town families, clerks, professionals and people trapped in difficult circumstances. Some characters are overwhelmed by poverty or social expectations; others become involved in absurd conflicts or experience an unexpected moment of insight.
In La giara, a broken earthenware jar leads to an increasingly ridiculous dispute between two stubborn men. La patente explores superstition and social exclusion through dark humour. In Ciàula scopre la luna, the harsh world of a Sicilian sulphur mine gives way to a moment of wonder and unexpected beauty.
Pirandello’s humour can be sharp, but his stories also show sympathy for vulnerable people. They explore the difference between how individuals see themselves and how they are judged by others, without reducing every narrative to the same theme.

Pirandello’s original writing can present difficulties for modern language learners: long sentence structures, unusual expressions and some regional or historical vocabulary.
