Se guardi la cerniera di un giubbotto, di uno zaino o di un paio di pantaloni, a volte trovi tre piccole lettere scritte sul metallo: YKK. Non sono un codice segreto, ma il marchio di una grande azienda giapponese.
La storia comincia nel 1934, quando Tadao Yoshida ha aperto a Tokyo una piccola azienda che produceva cerniere. All'inizio costruire le cerniere richiedeva molto tempo e le persone dovevano fare gran parte del lavoro a mano. Yoshida ha deciso allora di comprare macchine che potevano produrre cerniere più velocemente e con meno errori.
La sigla YKK deriva dal nome giapponese dell'azienda, Yoshida Kōgyō Kabushiki Kaisha, che significa più o meno «Società industriale Yoshida».
Con il passare degli anni, YKK ha aperto fabbriche in molti paesi ed è diventata una delle aziende che producono più cerniere al mondo. L'azienda ha avuto successo anche perché cerca di produrre cerniere di buona qualità: una cerniera deve funzionare bene anche quando la apriamo e la chiudiamo molte volte.
Oggi le cerniere YKK si trovano su vestiti, borse, valigie e molti altri oggetti. Le tre lettere sono così comuni che spesso le vediamo, ma non ci facciamo attenzione.
