The story

Their story unfolds against the background of real historical events in seventeenth-century northern Italy: war, famine, political disorder and the devastating plague of 1630. Faith and religion are also central to the novel, shaping the choices, fears and hopes of many characters. Manzoni brings private lives and real history together, showing how ordinary people try to survive when love, power, violence and faith collide.
