Alcuni animali marini, come i gabbiani, riescono invece a bere acqua salata.
Why Can't We Drink Seawater?
When we are very thirsty, drinking a glass of seawater might seem like a good idea. In reality, it would make us even thirstier and could cause our bodies to lose too much water. The problem is the large amount of salt found in seawater.
One kilogram of seawater contains about 35 grams of salts, mainly ordinary table salt. Our bodies need a little salt to function, but too much salt can be dangerous.
When we drink seawater, our kidneys, two organs that clean the blood, must remove the extra salt through urine. But our kidneys cannot remove all that salt using only the water we have drunk. For this reason, the body must also use some of the water it already contains.
The result is surprising: if we drink seawater to quench our thirst, we lose more water than we drink. Instead of decreasing, our thirst increases, and our bodies lose more and more water.
Some marine animals, such as seagulls, can drink saltwater. They have special glands near their eyes that remove extra salt through their nostrils. We humans, however, cannot do this.
