A volte succede dopo pochi secondi.

Why Do Onions Make Us Cry?

All it takes is cutting an onion, and our eyes immediately fill with tears. Sometimes it happens after just a few seconds. But why does a simple vegetable make us cry?

An onion contains different substances that normally remain separate inside its cells, the tiny parts that make up the onion. When we cut it with a knife, we break these cells, and the substances mix together. This creates a substance that irritates the eyes. It easily enters the air and reaches our eyes.

When this substance reaches the moist surface of our eyes, they begin to burn and immediately produce more tears. This is a natural way to protect our eyes: tears help wash away the irritating substance.

There are a few tricks to reduce this problem. For example, we can put the onion in the refrigerator before cutting it. This way, less of the substance reaches our eyes. Using a sharp knife also helps because it breaks fewer cells.

However, onions do not produce these substances to make humans cry. These substances help protect the plant from animals and other living things.
