Why Are Flamingos Pink?

Flamingos are famous for their long legs and pink feathers. But they are not born this color. When they hatch, the chicks have very soft white or gray feathers. Over time, they turn pink because of what they eat.

The secret is in their food. Substances called carotenoids give flamingos their pink color. They are found in certain algae and small aquatic animals, such as shrimp. When flamingos eat these algae and small animals, the carotenoids enter their bodies and give color to their feathers, skin, and beaks.

The color can vary greatly from one bird to another. Some flamingos are pale pink, while others have almost red feathers. The difference depends mainly on the amount of carotenoids in their food. The type of flamingo and its age can also affect its color.

In zoos, flamingos receive special food that helps them keep their natural color. If they do not eat enough carotenoids, their feathers become lighter over time.

Pink color is also important when flamingos look for a mate. A strong pink color can be a sign that a flamingo is healthy and eats enough food. For this reason, it can help the bird find a mate.
