The Banana That Took Over Supermarkets

Most bananas we find in supermarkets today look the same. They have yellow skins, a slightly curved shape, and a sweet taste. But until the middle of the twentieth century, a different type of banana was sold in many countries.

It was called Gros Michel. People liked it because it tasted good and had a strong skin, which made it suitable for long journeys by ship. For many years, it was the most popular imported banana in the United States and Europe.

Then a disease called Panama disease began to spread. It is caused by a fungus that attacks the roots of banana plants. The disease reached many banana plantations and destroyed huge numbers of Gros Michel plants. This type of banana still exists, but it is no longer the world's best-selling banana.

Banana growers had to look for another type. They chose the Cavendish, a banana that was resistant to the fungus that had attacked Gros Michel. Starting in the 1950s and 1960s, Cavendish bananas became increasingly common in stores around the world.

Today, however, the Cavendish is also in danger. Another type of the same fungus is spreading in different parts of the world. That is why scientists are looking for types of bananas that are more resistant to disease. They want to ensure that people can continue growing this fruit, which is eaten all over the world.
