The Animal with Three Hearts and Blue Blood
The octopus is one of the most surprising animals in the sea. It has eight arms, can change color, and can squeeze through very narrow holes. But the strangest things are inside its body: it has three hearts, and its blood is blue.
Two hearts pump blood toward the gills, the organs that allow the octopus to breathe underwater. The third heart, however, sends oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body.
The blue color comes from a substance called hemocyanin, which contains copper and carries oxygen. In human blood, however, hemoglobin carries oxygen. This substance contains iron and gives blood its red color. Hemocyanin also works in cold water.
There is another curious fact: when an octopus swims, the heart that sends blood to its body can stop beating for a while. This is why swimming is very tiring for an octopus, which often prefers to move along the seabed using its arms.
Three hearts, blue blood, and a very soft body that can bend easily: the octopus is an animal very different from those that live on land.
