Qui l'acqua sporca e alcuni pesci portati dall'uomo mettono in pericolo questi animali.

The Animal That Can Regrow Its Legs

In Mexico, there is a very unusual salamander that can regrow certain parts of its body. It is called the axolotl and has a curious appearance: a wide head, small eyes, and three groups of gills on each side of its head. The gills look like little feathers and allow it to breathe underwater.

The axolotl spends its entire life in water and, unlike many other salamanders, keeps some body parts that other salamanders have only when they are young, even after it becomes an adult.

But the most surprising thing is that it can regrow its legs. If it loses a leg in an accident or because another animal attacks it, it can grow a new leg, complete with bones, muscles, nerves, and skin. It is not just a scar, the mark left after an injury: the new leg can work just like the one it had before.

The axolotl can also regrow other parts of its body, such as its tail and parts of its heart and brain. This is why scientists study it with great interest. They want to better understand how certain parts of the body can grow again.

In the wild, however, this animal is in serious danger. It lives in the canals and wetlands of Xochimilco, near Mexico City. Here, polluted water and certain fish brought in by humans put these animals at risk.
