The First Traffic Light That Ended Badly

In December 1868, something never seen before appeared in London: a traffic light. It was installed near Parliament, in an area where many horse-drawn carriages and people on foot passed by.

At that time, the streets were used mainly by horse-drawn carriages. It was difficult for people to cross the road at intersections. To make the streets safer, engineer John Peake Knight designed a traffic light similar to the signals used for trains.

The new traffic light had two movable arms that showed when to stop and when to go. At night, it used two lights, one red and one green, powered by gas. A police officer had to operate the traffic light by hand.

At first, the traffic light seemed to work well, but a short time later there was an accident. A gas leak caused an explosion, and the police officer operating the traffic light was injured. After the accident, the traffic light was removed and was never used again.

For many years, police officers continued to control most of the traffic in London. Electric traffic lights, which were much safer, arrived only in the twentieth century.

That first traffic light was not a success, but it was the first step toward the traffic lights we see today in cities all over the world.
