The Planet That Could Float on Water
Imagine a pool of water so large that it could hold an entire planet. Now imagine putting Saturn into this pool. It could float because it is less dense than water!
Saturn is the second-largest planet in the Solar System, after Jupiter. Its diameter, the distance from one side of the planet to the other through its center, is about nine times that of Earth. It is made mainly of hydrogen and helium, two very light gases.
The most surprising thing is its average density. Density tells us how much a certain amount of material weighs compared with the space it occupies. One cubic centimeter of Saturn weighs about 0.69 grams on average. The same volume of water weighs about 1 gram. This means that Saturn, as a whole, is less dense than water.
Of course, we can only imagine Saturn floating. There is no pool large enough, and more importantly, Saturn is not a solid body. It is an enormous planet made mainly of gas and has no real surface to walk on.
Of all the planets in the Solar System, Saturn is the only one with an average density lower than that of water.
