The Blue Sunsets of Mars
On Earth, when the Sun sets, the sky often turns red, orange, and pink. On Mars, however, a blue light appears mainly around the Sun, while the rest of the sky has different colors. It is one of the most curious sights on the red planet.
The difference is mainly caused by dust in the atmosphere, which is the air surrounding the planet. Mars has much less air than Earth, but it contains tiny grains of dust that can stay in the air for a long time.
These grains change the direction of sunlight. During the day, the Martian sky often looks yellow-orange. At sunset, however, the dust causes more blue light to reach our eyes from the direction of the Sun. This is why the blue light is easier to see around the Sun. The dust sends the other colors mainly in different directions.
NASA's robots exploring Mars have photographed these sunsets several times. In 2015, the Curiosity rover photographed a blue sunset on Mars. In the images, the Sun looks small, with a soft blue glow around it.
In fact, the Sun looks smaller on Mars than on Earth because Mars is much farther from the Sun than Earth is.
