How the Easy-Open Can Was Invented

Today, all you need to do to open a can is lift a small tab. But until the 1960s, opening many beverage cans required a special tool.

The first beverage cans appeared in the United States in the 1930s. They were made of metal and had no built-in opening system. To drink, you had to use a pointed tool to make two holes in the lid: one to let the liquid out and the other to let air in.

In 1962, an American inventor named Ermal Fraze applied for a patent, a document that protects his invention. A metal tab made it possible to open a can without using any tools. The idea soon became popular because it was very convenient.

However, the first tabs had a problem: they came off completely and often ended up on the ground. These small pieces of metal littered the environment and could be dangerous.

In the 1970s, a better system was invented and became common in the following years: a tab that stays attached to the lid. This system reduced the number of small pieces of metal left on the ground.

Since then, the opening system has changed very little. An invention that seems simple has changed something millions of people do every day, often without thinking about it.
