Oggi i visitatori possono entrare in alcuni corridoi e vedere queste città.

The Cities Hidden Underground

In Cappadocia, a region in central Turkey, there are entire cities hidden underground. From above, they are almost impossible to see. But just a few meters below the surface, there are rooms, corridors, stairways, and even churches and other places for prayer.

One of the most famous is Derinkuyu, an underground city that reaches about 85 meters below the surface. It has many underground levels where thousands of people could live with their animals and enough food to stay underground for a long time.

The inhabitants dug these cities into volcanic rock, which is fairly soft and easy to work with. During wars and enemy attacks, families could hide underground and close the entrances with enormous round stone doors. The narrow corridors made it difficult for enemies to enter.

Underground, there were kitchens, rooms for storing food, wells for water, and long shafts that brought fresh air even to the lowest levels.

These cities are very old, and people used them for many centuries. In the past, groups of Christians also hid here to escape danger. Today, visitors can enter some of the corridors and explore these cities. For a long time, thousands of people found a safe place here.
