Why Are Manhole Covers Round?

When we walk down the street, we often see large metal covers on the sidewalk or in the road. Many are round, but they are not shaped this way just to look nice.

The main reason is safety. A round cover cannot fall through its opening, even if we turn it or tilt it sideways. A square cover, however, can fall through a square opening if we put it in the wrong position. This is because the distance between two opposite corners of the opening is longer than one side of the cover.

The round shape also has another advantage. Manhole covers are often very heavy because cars and trucks drive over them. A worker can put a round cover on its edge and roll it to move it, without lifting it completely off the ground.

Also, we can put a round cover back in place without having to turn it to the correct position. It has no corners and fits in any position.

Of course, not all manhole covers are round. There are also square and rectangular covers, especially for certain underground passages and systems.

The next time you see a manhole cover, you will know why that shape is so useful.
