The Strangest Marathon in History

On August 30, 1904, during the Olympic Games in St. Louis, United States, one of the strangest marathons in history took place. It was very hot, the roads were dusty, and the athletes had very little water available.

One of the runners, Fred Lorz, left the race after about 15 kilometers and got into a car. When the car stopped because of an engine problem, he started running again and reached the stadium first. The spectators celebrated him as the winner, but shortly afterward everyone discovered that he had traveled part of the route by car. The organizers therefore disqualified him.

Another athlete, Thomas Hicks, kept running even though he was already extremely tired. The people helping him gave him a substance called strychnine, along with some brandy, an alcoholic drink. Today we know that strychnine is a powerful poison. Hicks reached the finish line in terrible condition, with help from the people accompanying him, but the organizers declared him the winner.

Other runners also had incredible experiences. The Cuban runner Félix Carvajal stopped to talk to spectators and ate some unripe apples that he picked along the road. The apples gave him a terrible stomachache.

There were 32 athletes at the start, but only 14 finished the race. That marathon has remained famous mainly for all the strange things that happened during it.
