The Planet Where a Day Is Longer Than a Year
Something very strange happens on Venus: the planet takes longer to turn once on its axis than to travel around the Sun. If we count the time it takes to complete one full rotation, a day lasts longer than a year.
Earth takes about 24 hours to complete one rotation. Venus, however, rotates very slowly. It takes about 243 Earth days to turn once on its axis, while it takes about 225 Earth days to travel around the Sun.
But there is a surprising detail. On Venus, the Sun rises in the west and sets in the east. On Earth, the opposite happens. This is because Venus rotates in the opposite direction to almost all the other planets.
There is another important difference. On Venus, about 117 Earth days pass between one sunrise and the next. So, if we count the time between two sunrises, a day on Venus is shorter than its year.
Venus also has very high temperatures and pressures. On its surface, the temperature reaches about 465°C. In addition, air pressure, which is the force with which the atmosphere presses down on the surface, is about 90 times greater than on Earth. It is a very different planet from ours, where even time seems to work in a strange way.
