The Desert That Turns into a Mirror

In Bolivia, almost 3,700 meters above sea level, there is an enormous white desert that turns into a mirror at certain times of the year. It is called Salar de Uyuni and is the largest salt flat in the world, covering more than 10,000 square kilometers.

Thousands of years ago, there were large lakes in this area. Over time, the water evaporated, turning into vapor in the air, and left a huge amount of salt on the ground. Today, the ground is almost completely flat, and when it doesn't rain for many months, it looks like a plain covered in snow.

During the rainy season, especially between December and March, a little water can cover the salt. When the wind stops, the water reflects the sky like a mirror. The clouds seem to float beneath your feet, and the line between the land and the sky almost disappears. It is difficult to tell where the land ends and the sky begins.

This beautiful sight attracts visitors from all over the world. Many come to photograph the landscape and walk on what looks like an enormous mirror of water.

When the water evaporates, the mirror disappears and the desert becomes completely white again.
