How the Microwave Oven Was Invented
In 1945, an American engineer named Percy Spencer was working on a radar device when, according to the most famous version of the story, he noticed something strange: a chocolate bar he had in his pocket had melted.
Spencer worked for a company called Raytheon and was studying a device called a magnetron, which produced microwaves for radar systems. He thought that perhaps those invisible waves had heated the chocolate, so he decided to do some experiments.
First, he put some corn kernels near the device. After a short time, the kernels began to pop and turned into popcorn. Then he tried an egg, which became so hot that it exploded.
Spencer realized that microwaves could heat food quickly. Raytheon then built a machine that used microwaves to heat food.
In 1947, the first microwave oven, called the Radarange, went on sale. It was enormous, weighed hundreds of kilograms, and cost thousands of dollars. For this reason, it was used mainly in restaurant kitchens and other large buildings.
Only many years later did smaller, less expensive models become available for use at home.
It had all started with a chocolate bar left in a pocket.
